![]() Twain wrote that were he had once taken great solace from watching the river flow, after he had learned to read the surface as an indicator of what was under it, he was never able to simply watch the water, knowing that that ripple indicated a shoal that would ground the boat, or that eddy came from an underwater snag that would rip a hull, etc. There is also a caveat that we can learn from Mark Twain, who said of his experience learning to pilot a river boat on the Mississippi. It isn't the 'ear', it is the brain that will change and that change will make music, in general, a deeper experience. So, while the modern ETD's are able to render a piano so well in tune that there is no real reason to go further, the effort one will spend in learning to tune aurally will repay the practitioner many times over in and increased discernment of all musical sound. I will add that the process of learning to tune aurally, particularly recognizing the intervals' internal relationships, will develop a sense of hearing that cannot be had any other way. ![]() Somewhat tempted to have a go at my own tuning touch ups. ![]()
